Most music historians agree that the
Cuban Son is the backbone for
contemporary salsa and was probably
the most popular dance music genre to
emerge from Cuba during the early
20th century. Son developed in the late
1800’s. It began as an Afro-Cuban

Cuban Son is a musical style
that originated in the Oriente
province in the eastern part
of Cuba. It combines the influence of two musical cultures, Spanish
and African, into a style of music many refer to as 'Afro-Cuban'. One
of the foundations of this music is the rhythm known as 'clave'.
Son is believed to be the first musical
genre to use drums played with bare
hands. Son possesses numerous
African musical influences including
syncopated rhythms and melodic line
that had no connection to the
underlying percussion.
